Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. Educators at this level are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum that meets the requirements of an approved learning framework and for maintaining compliance in other areas of service operations. They use specialised knowledge and analyse and apply theoretical concepts to diverse work situations. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other educators.

Early childhood educators work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools or kindergartens.

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 280 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

Delivery is blended with face to face classroom activities, self-paced online learning modules and immersive practical placement opportunities as well as workplace based learning and assessment.

This program is designed as a 52 week delivery program which meets the AQF recommended timeframe of 1 to 2 years. With school holidays, this program extends to 61 weeks total. CLJ Training has determined that the volume of learning and amount of training is suitable based on the following considerations:

  • The immersive practical aspect of the course delivery where students participate in mandatory work placement at a minimum of 1 day per fortnight, totalling 424 hours of total placement activity, which is much higher than the training package requirement of 280 hours
  • The fact that during all placement days, a qualified trainer/assessor is present to support students throughout their learning, providing constant access and support on the floor
  • Student classroom (both physical and virtual) numbers are restricted to 8 students per group
  • Learning materials are released to students by the trainer/assessor at an individual basis. This ensures that students are not overwhelmed with too much learning material
  • Assessments are made available to students by their trainer/assessor based on the trainer/assessor’s observation of that individual’s progress and capabilities. This ensure students are only able to attempt demonstration of competency once deemed ready for assessment
  • An additional 3 to 6 months of learning and demonstration of assessment is made available to individuals who may require it. This is in the form of a weekly interaction on the floor of a facility with a qualified trainer/assessor.
  • The rigorous pre-screening process where students are only accepted into the program if they demonstrate a suitable level of maturity and capability for not only complete the intended AQF level program but also their suitability for working in this industry.

Learners have a detailed understanding of the work involved, having already gained employment in the sector. The fact that they are employed at the time of enrolment means they have greater industry experience and opportunities to apply skills and knowledge in the workplace.
